About

Laura Kopio is a Helsinki-based visual artist who has graduated from the Turku Art Academy and is finishing her studies in art history and philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä. His work deals mainly with power, violence and authority. With the study of art history and philosophy, the thematics of suffering, which Theodor Adorno and Hannah Arendt have dealt with in their work, have become a central area of interest. For Kopio, art is thinking and she hopes that the works will show the dialogue, distance and presence between history and the present, as well as the open questions related to them.

In her work, one can see the dialogue, distance and presence of history and the present, which remain partly open questions. The themes of the works are encapsulated in a contradiction in which the aforementioned becomes visible as an intertwining of historical events and the present. The works show the collective trauma of violence, subjugation and conditioning, and the gaze directed far away, to human history.
